In order to reduce forklift repairs, regular inspections can help you save greatly over the long haul use of your machine. The standing joke in the industry is a lift truck technician coining the saying "Pay me now, or pay me later," because it usually costs more to procrastinate when it comes to lift trucks. For example, the minor fixes which go unrepaired could eventually turn into costly repairs.

Tilt Cylinders
Oil leaks are a very serious issue if they are not checked. Check for damage or oil leaks regularly. Oil leakage can result in uncontrolled mast movement and this can be very dangerous. Whether the leaks are external or in the cylinder, the outcome could lead to cylinder drift and loss of vital fluid. When leaks or damage are detected, you usually will have to replace the whole cylinder assembly or the seals.

Chains
Be sure to pay attention as you don't want mast lift chains to stretch beyond acceptable limits. Look carefully for any signs of wear and tear or damage. Check frequently with a chain wear gauge so as to monitor the wear. If the chain is rusted or worn beyond 2 percent, it is time to replace the chain. Following these guidelines will help keep your machinery running optimally.

Mast
When operating the lift control lever, the mast needs to be moved down and up smoothly, making sure to inspect if the mast is moving smoothly backwards and forwards. You might need to lubricate the mast strip sliding surfaces if the sliding surfaces are binding. Also lubricate their fittings, because there is a fitting located on both sides of the inner mast. The lift bracket side rollers are one more lubrication spot.

Forks
The blades have to be inspected for damage, wear and cracks since worn or cracked forks could fail with out any warnings. Any fork damage of course means taking the truck out of service right away. If the cracks are deeper than just on the surface, they should be replaced because they really can't be safely fixed.
