The biggest difference between forklifts is the way they are powered. Several use internal combustion motors and several are electrical powered. For carrying loads which are heavy while maintaining low operating costs, electric forklifts are normally the best choice. Electric forklifts are most often found in indoor work environments. For outdoor applications, internal combustion forklifts are generally recommended.
A motorized drive, manual drive and fork truck are the three kinds of forklifts. Fork trucks are motorized and have cabs and backup alarms. Motorized drive forklifts usually have a protected seat for the operator. Manual drive forklifts are manually powered.
To be able to avoid tipping, several forklifts are counterbalanced. Other safety features include turntables or handrails. Specialty forklifts are available for certain uses. For example, narrow aisle forklifts are designed to work in very tight spaces. Rough-terrain forklifts work well on surfaces that are rocky and uneven.
