Rough Terrain Forklift Safety
The rough terrain forklift is meant for construction sites, where materials have to be moved around on unpaved surfaces. The safe and proper use of rough terrain forklifts is important to ensure the safety of both the operator and other workers at the work location.
Terrain
These trucks are built for rough terrain, but care should still be taken in order to avoid tip overs. The forklift is top heavy and when lifting, should just be operated on level ground.
Speed
Operators of forklifts should always drive at a safe speed even if there are no Occupational Safety and Health Administration rules governing the speed limits of forklifts. Driving on terrain which is rough or uneven needs even more caution. Steering, particularly, could be dangerous at higher speeds.
Incline
If you are operating on a slope, you must keep the load on the equipment's uphill side. The rule of thumb is drive up, and back down. Never try to raise a load while operating on a sloped surface. The change in the center of gravity can cause the machinery to tip over.
Safety Devices
Like any driver, forklift operators are obliged to put on seat belts. Check that the overhead guard is firmly in place. Depending upon the working environment, hearing and eye protection might need to be worn. Make sure that a working fire extinguisher is mounted on the forklift.
Weather
The operating conditions of a forklift can be affected by climate. Load handling, speed and turning might need to be adjusted to guarantee safety when operating a forklift in snow, ice or rain.
