Forklift Battery Safety
The power to operate electric lift trucks is supplied by huge industrial batteries which have to be charged frequently and maintained properly. Safety procedures should always be followed when connecting the battery to the charger. It is really essential to check battery fluid levels.
PPE - Personal Protective Equipment
It is essential for workers working with a forklift battery to wear eye protection. Other PPG include goggles, safety glasses, or a full face shield. The right way to protect skin and clothing from other residue or leaked acid is to put on thick rubber gloves on the hands and an approved apron on the body.
Emergency Eyewash Station
Next to the charging place must be an emergency eyewash station. The path to the post must not be obstructed and a worker who is injured must be able to reach the eyewash station from the charging area within 10 seconds without running.
Charger Safety
The charger should be the same amperage as the battery. It should be turned off while the battery is being plugged in.
Open Flames
Open fire are prohibited near a battery and charging area. Never allow items like matches or lighters to be used while somebody is checking the battery fluid levels.
Ventilation
The battery charging place also needs to be correctly ventilated. The recharging process could cause fumes to be released. These gases are both toxic and explosive.
